Tallinn is one of the oldest cities on the Baltic Sea, its first known reference having been made by the Arab geographer Idrisi in 1154. Today its beautiful historic heart remains intact. The focus of the city is the hilltop Toompea Castle district and it is here, among the winding, cobbled streets with their picture-book mediaeval buildings, landmark watchtowers and graceful spires, that you should start your explorations. As you stroll through Town Hall Square, glance up to the weather vane, 'Old Thomas', atop the spire. The original, which has been gauging winds from the Baltic since 1530, is now exhibited in the Town Hall.
