Athens is a city of striking contrasts, where the small picturesque winding streets of the Plaka and the chic boulevards of Kolonaki jostle for a place amongst the most ancient of buildings. All of this is watched over by the most imposing sight of all, the Parthenon.

A stay in Athens is not complete without visiting the Acropolis from where you are guaranteed a view of the temple of Athena Nike. Take the funicular to the Chapel of St. George at the top of Lycabettus Hill for a fantastic wiew and catch the changing of the Evzones guard at the Houses of Parliment.

Shopping
In Plaka, the Old Town, you will find small shops selling leather, jewellery, and hand-crafted items. Visit the daily flea market at Monastiraki - but be prepared to haggle! Ermou street has many European shops and department stores, whilst Kolonaki is the place to go for designer names and to just sit and watch the world go by.

Wining and Dining
For a traditional Greek atmosphere and specialities try one of the many taverns, cafes or bars hidden away in the smalll streets of Plaka. Start with meze, which is almost a meal in itself, or try moussaka or stuffed vine leaves. They say the best olives come from Greece so make sure you don't leave without tasting them, pherhaps with a glass of restina or ouzo to wash them down.
